Ok, so you've got
your ecommerce solution setup.
You're selling products
and you have an idea of what you expect to sell as you have
a business plan or profit and loss responsibility.
However, if you plan
to sell 10,000 widgets over twelve months. Do you have any idea
how many you plan to see on a month on month basis. Are you
simple flat-phasing (dividing by twelve). That's all well and
good if you can sustain the same supply/demand level consistently
month on month. If you can then you do not have to worry about
the bank manager or the CEO coming back to you and questioning
your forecasting skills.
Chances are that you
won't be able to have consistent supply and demand because lets
face it - if business was this easy everyone would be millionaires.
How about you look
at it from a more logical way. Let's say we're selling inflatable
beach toys sales are obviously going to peak your sales during
the summer months when everyone is planning their family holidays.
There will clearly be sales from those people (mainly couples
without kids, singles) that can afford the time to go away during
the winter periods. However, the phasing of your targets should
look something like this:
The same is with any
product. By phasing products individually by channel and by
product you will have a target methodology which works for you
instead of against.
